DAVID WEISS: Endangered Species—The Music of Wayne Shorter
Motéma, 2013

MODERN BIG BAND – This 12-piece ensemble project, assembled to salute Wayne Shorter in his 80th birthday year, is loaded with top talent: Ravi Coltrane, Geri Allen, Jeremy Pelt and the Strickland twins are just some of the names here. The repertoire focuses on Shorter’s early, hard-bop period, but also nods to his time with Miles Davis in the 1960s (#2) and his more recent, expansive works (#6). One original tune (#4) refers both to Shorter’s funkiness and soprano sax power.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6

1. 9:49 – swinging big-band bop, solos for trombone/sax/piano/drums
2. 14:29 – flowing version of mysterious modal ballad; wonderful solos from trumpet, tenor sax, piano… and the ensemble sounds great too
3. 8:43 – heavy sound, tart harmony: swings under trombone & alto sax
4. 11:06 – horn counterpoint, extrapolated from a single Shorter phrase; sneaky groove under driving soprano sax & hard-swinging piano
5. 8:45 – relaxed ballad, sumptuously arranged, very fine trumpet solo
6. 14:48 – majestic suite: rich piano fantasy, slow rise, thrusting trumpet, then a calm soprano solo sax heats way up, driving to big ensemble end
