Two decades separate the Brahms First and Second Piano Concertos. The D minor Concerto (written in 1854-58, when B was in his mid-20s) begins with a somber, titanic theme; the second theme is lyrical; the development introduces a majestic new theme and the whole mvmt is majestic. The 2nd mvmt, dedicated to Brahms’ impossible love, Clara Schumann, with whom he spent summers after Robert’s death, and whom he secretly supported later in her life, is meditative, rhapsodic and songful. The 3rd mvmt is a vigorous rondo. The B flat Major Concerto is epic in breadth and scale, with grandeur but no pomp. The 1st mvmt opens with a gently rising theme, which becomes a mighty march, before the supple, swaying 2nd theme is heard. The music becomes passionate and, after lovely explorations, ends heroically. The 2nd mvmt starts with a bold piano theme and a contrasting sighing string melody, followed by rhapsodic development. The 3rd mvmt is lyrical, with a heartbreakingly lovely cello melody, the 4th a lithe, carefree rondo.
