The New Kentucky Colonels “Live in Holland 1973” Label: Self-Release Joseph Reviewed 12/9/13 Terrific live recording of bluegrass greats guitarist Clarence & mandolinist Roland White & banjoist Herb Pederson, with Eric White on bass. All at the height of their playing powers. *= favorite cuts 1 – (1:10) Fire on the Mountain. Short instrumental intro. 2 – (3:02) Never Ending Sea of Love* Fine vocals, Clarence White leads the way. 3 – (2:57) Dixie Breakdown* Best I’ve ever heard Herb pick the banjo. 4 – (3:12) The Field Have Turned Brown* Soulful Roland White vocals, good trio. 5 – (2:18) Take a Whiff On Me* Mid-tempo, another winner. 6 – (2:44) This Is my Destiny* ¾ time, great trio vocals. 7 – (2:03) Mocking Banjo* RIYL theme song from “Deliverance.” 8 – (3:13) If You’re Ever Gonna Love Me* Mid-tempo, quite nice. 9 – (3:07) Last Thing On My Mind* Really fine Clarence White vocals, very nice. 10 – (2:36) Dark Hollow* Herb on lead vocal, great Clarence guitar break. 11 – (2:09) Soldier’s Joy/Black Mountain Rag* Terrific instrumental by all. 12 – (3:01) Why You Been Gone So Long* Another fine vocal by Clarence. 13 – (3:06) Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms/Will You Be Lovin’ Another Man* Up- tempo medley, awesome. 14 – (2:26) I Know What It Means To Be Lonesome.* Mid, Roland sings lead. 15 – (2:55) Working on a Building Slow-to mid, OK. 16 – (1:42) Rawhide* Strong rendition of Monroe classic. | ||
