FRANK POTENZA: For Joe
Capri, 2013

MAINSTREAM JAZZ GUITAR – Potenza, a protégé of the great Joe Pass, reunites Pass’s working band from the 1960s for this airy tribute session. Two guitars, bass, and drums give it a light, agile sound, old-fashioned but still plenty lively.

Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 6, 8

1. 5:34 – cool, relaxed swing: very light and casual
2. 5:15 – meditative solo intro, then a breezy bossa nova shuffle
3. 4:01 – upbeat but quiet jazz waltz, both guitars take flight
4. 3:48 – swift, cool-toned bebop: fleet-fingered guitars and bright drums
5. 5:06 – relaxed Ellington classic: solo start, then a lazy blues sway
6. 4:02 – cool Django Reinhardt rhumba, low & slinky with hand drums
7. 4:27 – standard ballad, strolls along nicely
8. 4:05 – guitars spar lightly, then quartet swings easily, picks up in middle
9. 4:30 – bustling Brazilian rhythm, guitars bounce happily on top
10. 4:31 – a sweet, relaxed swing: bass solo in middle
