Album Review
DJ Muscat
Reviewed 2014-01-31
Merchants of minimalism, Cave revive experimental rock sounds from the 1970's with a close attention to repetition and rhythm. Each of the songs on this album are expansive, entrancing, instrumental jams filled with influences from jazz to world. Their stellar musicianship and experimental inclinations blast any criticisms of "retro" or "derivative" out of the water. One of the most criminally overlooked albums from 2013.
Favorites: Hard to choose, probably 1 and 4 in particular. No FCCs.

RIYL: Goat, Can, Dawn of Midi, Faust, Neu!

1. (11:53) **** Funky, jerky, minimal groove. Transitions into heavier, guitar driven sections. Krautrock at its most intoxicating.
2. (8:52) *** Played in 7/8. Similar off-kilter energy to track 1. Midway through speeds up into a harder-edged rock jam.
3. (8:48) *** Heavily-effected guitar with swirling background textures and clattering drums. Nice keyboard and organ interplay. Tame middle before kicking back into the initial groove.
4. (5:02) **** Organ led jam. Short and sweet with incredible musicianship. Definite world music feel.
5. (7:14) *** Peaceful, jazzy opening. Rolling drums and bass come in about 1:30. Mid-tempo, dramatic groove. I know what CD I'm playing on my next road trip.
