“Adult Film” Tim Kasher
Alternative rock with incisive, if often depressing, lyrics from the prolific, 39-year-old singer/songwriter. This is Kasher’s second true solo CD, but it is part of an impressive body of work he has released on his own and with his bands Cursive and the Good Life. The pace of the tracks is often frantic and amped up — with circus-like synths, Farfisa organ and even the theremin on one track. Vocals can be a bit pitchy. Many tracks bleed together. Not Kasher’s best work, but there are more than a few excellent tracks worth playing. Lots of FCCs, so play the radio-friendly edits.

Recommended: 2, 1 (FCC), 3 (FCCs), 4, 7, 8 (FCC). Play radio-friendly versions of 1, 3 and 8 on separate disc!!

1. (3:14) American Lit — Hyped up, driving, organ-centric indie rock with snapping snare drums and “spoken” vocals. ** FCC — “give two shits”
2. (3:29) Truly Freaking Out — Fun, galloping romp — bouncing, swirling synths under — with prominent drums and shotgun lyrics. Best track!! ****
3. (4:26) Where’s Your Heart Lie — FCCs — “f-cked it up”; also “hardly give a f-ck” Depressing piano ballad. Becomes noisy as the track progresses. Prominent snare drum. A bit of brass near the end. ***
4. (3:48) The Willing Cuckold — Pleasantly paced, upbeat track with nice dynamics and a good hook. Organ, guitar, vibraphone, drums. ***
5. (3:31) Life and Limbo — Minor key. Raw, roaring and raucous. Possible FCC — “piss poor”
6. (5:34) Lay Down your Weapons — Varies from ominous, almost orchestral to throbbing, pulsing rock and roll.
7. (3:38) You Scare Me to Death — Theremin meanders through a ghostly soundscape overlaid with uplifting acoustic guitar and breathy vocals. **
8. (2:56) A Raincloud Is a Raincloud — Another bouncy sing-along. Guitar, drums and synths — with brass in lead break. ** FCC — “horseshit”
9. (4:01) A Looping Distress Signal — Clashing and crashing, rocking number. Pounding drums. 1960s organ. Becomes symphonic in lead break.
10. (4:46) A Lullaby, sort of — Ballad with wistful, innocent vocals and plucking, harp-like strings — plus a nice mid-tempo rhythm.

Radio-friendly edits on separate disc.
