MATT WHITE: The Super Villain Jazz Band
ARC, 2013

POSTBOP – Debut release from a solid trumpeter out of Nashville’s jazz scene (which has more going on than you might think). It’s a lively set, mostly original tunes with chugging grooves that do tend to resemble each other, but this is also the first jazz album I’ve ever heard that includes a Britney Spears cover (#9).

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9

1. 8:48 – alternates gentle roll and strong stride; focused horns, lyrical piano
2. 9:52 – dark-tinged rolling groove, tough exterior with a softness inside
3. 9:24 – relaxed glide with stirring undercurrents and ballad-like interludes
4. 6:24 – a nifty beat propels this hopping Woody Shaw tribute; sinuous solos
5. 8:26 – a slower, circular groove alternates with bright, uptempo flare-ups
6. 4:28 – Tom Waits ballad: solo trumpet intro, then relaxed and boozy
7. 10:35 – driving, with a dark intensity balanced against reflective breaks
8. 8:33 – midtempo with a dancing, old-world melodic feel, lively solos
9. 8:25 – bass intro; deconstructed pop song with flowing tone-row solos
