JEFF LEDERER: Swing ‘n’ Dix
Little(i), 2013
AVANT-SWING – I don’t know what else to call this goofy quartet (sax/clarinet, cornet, tuba & drums), which merges edgy free-jazz with lazy swing, trad-jazz, and more. The title (note the double-entendre!) is taken from Lederer’s first Dixieland combo when he was a teenager. In more recent years he’s been a key member of Matt Wilson’s fun-loving band, and Wilson gets a prominent role as the drummer here.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9
1. 5:18 – rushed, lumpy-thumpy version of swing standard, free improv middle
2. 3:55 – a New Orleans-style funeral march with much wailing and howling
3. 6:13 – cute/sneaky stroll w/steady ride cymbal gets fast in the middle
4. 4:46 – laid-back chicken-peck rhythm, slouching feel, quiet drum solo
5. 4:34 – classic riffs, group vocals, wacky horns, and a drumbeat inventory
6. 8:21 – slow-drag Pee Wee Russell: acrobatic clarinet, others low-down
7. 5:35 – upbeat soul-jazz strut goes off its axis, horns bray, squeal & wail
8. 4:04 – old Shaker hymn: elastic vocal & band, in & out of melody/rhythm
9. 4:19 – real nice version of a classic tango, relaxed tempo, rough/cool solos
10. 5:25 – mellow slow-drag with strong flute, unusual harmony
11. 6:15 – upbeat stomp based on “Bye Bye Blues,” naughty group vocal
