HARRIS EISENSTADT: Golden State Songlines, 2013 AVANT-JAZZ – Eisenstadt, a prolific, restlessly inventive drummer, leads a unique quartet with flute (Nicole Mitchell), bassoon (Sara Schoenbeck), and bass (Mark Dresser). There’s a nice mix of freedom and unity here as the music expands outwards or contracts into a neat (if lopsided) little ball, and the reed/flute textures give it a chamber feel. It’s all pretty good, and highly unconventional. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6 1. 5:37 – staccato rhythm, tight flute/bassoon, quartet drifts apart into a void 2. 5:08 – chamber intro; bass goes out, then lumpy quartet groove, 3-note riff 3. 8:49 – relaxed start, bass kicks it into midtempo roll, stutter, stroll, and drive 4. 4:38 – jabbing bass/drums, furtive flute and bassoon have bold solos 5. 8:55 – fluttering intro falls into creaking improv, then lovely melodic calm 6. 6:22 – pretty tune over walking bass, bassoon gets wild in the middle 7. 7:50 – knotty solo bassoon, slow trudge, open bass solo, vibrant quartet [ Fo ] - 7 January 2014 |
