DAVID HELBOCK’S RANDOM/CONTROL: Think of Two Traumton, 2014 POSTMODERN JAZZ – Yowza! This German “piano trio” actually accounts for about 30 instruments between them as they create utterly insane, mind-blowing covers of tunes by Thelonious Monk (even tracks) and Brazilian legend Hermeto Pascoal (odd tracks). The texture and instrumentation changes constantly as the tunes hurl headlong between catchy riffs, silly noises, moments of free improvisation. It’s crazed and ridiculous and FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC! Fo’s Picks: Try any track. 1. 5:19 – maniacally happy, toe-tapping groove jumps all over the place 2. 7:05 – slow and mysterious, hauntingly beautiful balladry, gentle abstraction 3. 5:40 – upbeat & super-playful: horns & piano solo against loose, wiggly riffs 4. 6:19 – insanity: silly noises, chugging riff, slow mosey, lather rinse repeat! 5. 8:18 – moody prepared piano & quiet horn, upbeat Brazilian, brief madness 6. 4:20 – relaxed stroll with toys & dissonant horns, repetitive yet changing 7. 7:14 – tropical riffing slips into a rolling propulsion, repeatedly fractures 8. 7:10 – slow & random; bass clarinet, electronic drone diversion, ends gently 9. 0:56 – brief jumble of melodies and improve noises; freaky vocal break 10. 6:19 – upbeat, rolling, stays on its toes, flips out in the middle & at the end 11. 7:11 – very slow, wide open ballad, achingly delicate into lovely melody 12. 12:07 – gongs & drone, sneaky riffs, jabbing piano, happy jazz, lazy lope… ends after 7:00, one-minute of silence, hidden latin-exotica track [ Fo ] - 22 January 2014 | ||
