MATT RENZI: Rise and Shine
Three Ps, 2014

AVANT-MODERN JAZZ – Fresh, very cool sax/bass/drums trio (with some Indian percussion added on 1 & 5, trumpet on 3,4,7, and additional reeds/flute on 4). It’s an appealing sound, but Renzi’s crew keeps the listener guessing with complex interactions and a variety of textures.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6, 7

1. 4:23 – cool, slinky Indian-inspired melody w/ mridingam & vocal percussion
2. 9:08 – open, adventurous: stretches out with free sax moments, bass solo
3. 7:02 – relaxed but with dense interplay: crosshatched sax, lively trumpet
4. 5:29 – ballad-like quartet: intricate horn weavings, then calm chamber feel
5. 6:17 – neat intro & fluttering sax; mridingam solo dominates second half
6. 5:15 – moody piece built on Ornette Coleman reference, hi-energy middle
7. 7:00 – very nice, buoyant quartet with trumpet, vocal-like harmony
8. 1:48 – brief, exotic duet: oboe & chime percussion…
