ARI BROWN: Groove Awakening Delmark, 2014 POSTBOP – Veteran Chicago saxophonist Brown leads his long-running quintet through a set of soulful strolls and tasty 1970s-style grooves. Brown’s punchy tone is equally at home in avant-garde or straightahead settings, and this disc is mostly in the latter camp (although he does blow on two saxes simultaneously from time to time, or may bust a twisted growl out of nowhere). Some good stuff here! Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 1. 5:20 – straightforward medium-tempo swinger, a snappy walk 2. 5:03 – bass riff sets up jaunty groove; heats up gradually, duo-sax blowing 3. 11:06 – sweet, soulful stroll, really nice… gets briefly hot in the middle 4. 8:42 – catchy midtempo melody, solos twist & turn over solid rhythm 5. 8:26 – reggae version of a Coltrane tune! a bit odd, but solos are cool 6. 10:06 – relaxed Ellington ballad: has friendly openness, fine sax, bass solo 7. 4:08 – waltzing in the big-city streets, nice piano break here 8. 8:39 – snappy strut, oblique melody, sax works out over a tough groove 9. 3:57 – lovely spiritual ballad for piano & soprano sax [ Fo ] - 6 March 2014 | ||
