BEN STOLOROW & IAN CAREY: Duocracy
Kabocha, 2014

STRAIGHTAHEAD JAZZ – Bay Area piano/trumpet duo, conversing over a familiar stable of standards. With just the two of them there’s a nice sense of openness, like a fresh breeze clearing out a musty room.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 10

1. 5:30 – jaunty midtempo: trumpet swings, piano strolls
2. 5:44 – saloon piano & relaxed trumpet walk thru a charming tune
3. 5:42 – friendly midtempo take on a tune that’s usually a steeplechase
4. 7:59 – a cry-in-your-drink ballad, after hours… all alone… in the rain.
5. 5:29 – happy but skewed Thelonious Monk ditty, revels in imperfection
6. 4:59 – movie ballad, moves gently with a hint of sad romance
7. 6:24 – light, breezy sway: opens up a bit in the solos
8. 4:49 – abstract, percolating original, the duo roams, but arm in arm
9. 4:19 – mellow Gershwin stroll has a nice old-timey feel
10. 5:07 – lively, modernistic take on a well-worn but tricky tune
