“The Shape The Color The Feel” Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden
Born in Seattle and now settled in Nashville, Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden play lush, multi-dimensional indie pop-rock. The melodies jangle and the arrangements often result in bright, broad panoramic soundscapes. Tucker’s gentle, girlish vocals work well, whether they’re wrapped in rock, pop or folk. Very polished sound — but this artist and band remain under the radar, with little to no crossover to mainstream radio as yet. Some very nice, melodic tracks to choose from here.

Recommended: 3, 1, 7, 10, 8, 9. No FCCs.

1. (3:58) Hangover – Strong indie pop-rock with reverbed, ringing guitars creating a wall of sound under Tucker’s vocals. Thumping drums add energy to the jangly melody. ****
2. (4:09) Give Up the Ghost – A little more indie rock leaning. Jangly guitar. Tinkling keyboards. Drum beats. Strings plucked persistently to set up a clock-like rhythm.
3. (5:04) Looking Around – Strong, mid-tempo indie pop-rock. Nice shifts in dynamics and instrumentation — from soft and breathy to more jangly. Strong hooks. False ending evolves into shimmering trail-out. Segues directly into Track 4. ****
4. (3:06) Let Me Go – Down-tempo ballad that builds into power pop.
5. (3:12) Big Idea – Vintage 1970s pop-rock song with a bit more of an edge — complete with “Yeah-yeahs” and electric guitar in lead break.
6. (4:20) Wide Open Plain – Galloping rhythm established with rapidly strummed guitar triplets. Strong backbeat. Big guitar solo in break.
7. (4:26) Best Friend’s Love – Very nice, sweet love ballad. Showcases Tucker’s vocals at their more fragile and expressive. Warm harmonies in the chorus. ***
8. (3:52) Blue Hotel – Rapid-fire drumming serves as a counterpoint to jangly guitars and delicate vocals sung with a smile. **
9. (3:25) The State I’m In – Acoustic fingerpicked guitar under a song that veers more toward excellent indie folk than other tracks on the album. **
10. (3:53) Island of the Misfit – Indie-pop anthem with march-like rhythm and big jangly guitars. Maybe even a bit of a downhome, country-western feeling to the vocals. ***
