DAN WEISS: Fourteen Pi, 2014 EXPERIMENTAL – OK, this one is difficult to describe. Drummer Weiss has forged a huge, sprawling suite for 14 musicians (including 3 voices, 4 horns, harp, guitar and a full rhythm section) that spills across a huge dynamic range, from minimalist meditation to icy monoliths and cutting free-improv blasts. It’s all remarkable stuff, but very elusive and often uncomfortable. All vocals are wordless. DJs: This is a single piece of music! Each track blends right into the next. Fade in & out of tracks! Fo’s Picks: try anywhere… 1. 7:43 – march: adds layer on layer of carefully twisted shapes, rises to noise 2. 6:57 – falls into minimalist guitar/harp pattern, wordless vocals, handclaps 3. 3:31 – wordless vocals weave through a crystal maze, wild sax improv 4. 4:01 – stark piano into proggy drone/drive, intensity rises, then solo beat 5. 3:59 – quiet horns harmonize on melodic fragment, others join in gradually 6. 7:08 – voices continue pattern, give way to towering, stomping nightmare 7. 4:04 – quiet: contemplative solo piano, tuba drone, gentle voice/harp end [ Fo ] - 24 April 2014 |
