RIOT JAZZ BRASS BAND: Sousamaphone
self-released, 2014

HORNS A-PLENTY – Fun, stomping, funky, danceable 9-piece brass & drum group in the vein of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, but coming out of Manchester, England. I can’t stop listening to #2, but the rest of it is a treat as well. All tracks instrumental (except for the end of #7).

All fun. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, maybe 7, 8

1. 3:12 – midtempo, catchy and a little funky; trombone & trumpet breaks
2. 4:35 – Godzilla-movie intro, fantastic uptempo drum groove & Spanish riffs
3. 3:04 – hard funky drive, feels like the end credits of a movie
4. 4:17 – snappy drums/cool tuba underline punchy horns, relaxed breaks
5. 4:07 – easygoing urban strut; uplifting middle section; faster, optimistic end
6. 4:02 – sassy, funky stomp: tight arrangement, head-bobbing groove
7. 5:14 – stripped down intro, bright theme song picks up juice in second half
8. 3:34 – dramatic, with overlapping phrases and a dark drive underneath
