Brilliant Beast—Where Do You Want

Review by Luis A. Apolaya

The third release from the Minneapolis indie rock quartet has neatly packaged what would satisfy fans of fun and accessible alt rock. Not bad at all, any track would suffice but a handful of these tracks are of notable mention. Recommended: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7. RIYL Modest Mouse, Best Coast, The Fresh and Only’s, the xx.

*1. (3:24) Mid-fast, propulsive fuzzy guitar, one to nod your head to, standard indie rock otherwise.
2. (3:54) Mid-tempo, guitar is relatively calm, mellow but still manages to rock, especially by the closing.
*3. (5:08) Mid-tempo to mid-slow, guitar is much more tame, this is calmer, even soothing at this point, female vox also add to the laid-back feel of the track
**4. (3:11) Mid-fast, upbeat bass and percussion, guitar leads the flow well, weird chorus, one to please a crowd in a festival.
**5. (2:51) Female vox with surf rock and punky undertones, feels like soft Meowcore
6. (6:02) Mid-tempo, persistent buzz in the background and simple guitar riff in the foreground, ¾ of the way in an experimental guitar solo plays
*7. (2:37) Explosive guitars and drums to start, violin makes an appearance, another festival-ready head-nodder
