JAZZ VOCALS (OLD POPULAR SONGS)

The daughter of song-and-dance man Buddy Ebsen, Kiki Ebsen sings classic songs either associated with her father’s career or popular during his time. Most of this is much too old fashioned for KZSU, but a few songs work. Band includes keyboards, guitar, bass, woodwinds, and strings.

No FCC issues.

Slow, sad torch song. Syrupy orchestra. Play only on a “beautiful music” format. (4:46)
* Mid-slow. Surprisingly soulful interpretation Oz song. Well sung; well played. (5:42)
Slow. Another sad love song. Accompanied only by piano. Not bad. (3:00)
Mid-tempo. Orchestration worthy of a 60s variety show on TV. Yuck. (4:13)
* Mid-tempo. The 60s again, but classy this time. A bit of bossa nova. (3:03)
Way too slow take on a classic love song. Sultry horns. Sickening strings. (3:12)
* Mid-tempo. Cleverly “retro” novelty song. A bit of New Orleans in this. (2:03)
Very slow. Often recorded jazz standard is turned into sticky syrupy gloop. (4:16)
Very slow. One of her better vocals. Elegantly backed by a hollow-body guitar. (2:45)
Slow. Bluesy piano solo, can be used as an intro to #11. (0:46)
** W.C. Handy’s masterpiece nicely done by piano, bass, drums, and vocal. Definitely the best track on the album. (4:55)
Mid-slow. The most beautiful melody ever, cruelly suffocated by string orchestra. (4:35)
