STRAIGHT AHEAD JAZZ
Drummer/composer Shirazette Tinnin’s debut album displays much versatility and many influences. With a mix of acoustic and electric numbers, this music is high energy She mixes up her ensemble frequently, choosing from 2 pianists, 2 saxophonists (frequently Camille Thurman, whose album recently hit the a-file), a guitarist, 4 bassists, and a couple singers. All compositions are Tinnin’s, but #2 by McCoy Tyner & #6 by Eddie Harris.

No FCC issues.

1 ** Very fast. Tenor leads most of the way, piano takes it out. (6:31)
2 ** Mid-fast, slow, very fast. Sax & piano trade off sections. Exuberant, strong. (8:01)
3 Slow. shimmering intro—piano like a harp plus rolling cymbals; then a piano rhapsody with drums. (5:04)
4 * Mid-tempo. Early Return to Forever-ish, complete with Flora Purim-like vocal. (5:23)
5 Slow. Classic jazz pop vocal with electric piano accompaniment. Not much to it. (5:05)
6 Mid-slow. Funky & fusiony. Nice interplay b/t elec piano, gtr, sax, drums. Less thrilling than Harris’ original. (5:49)
7 Mid-slow. Gentle ballad featuring tenor sax and piano. (4:41)
8 Mid-tempo. Pleasant and happy background music. A bit too “smooth”. (5:43)
9 ** Mid-tempo. Elegant and snappy. Good electric guitar and piano. (3:59)
