HARD-BOP JAZZ ORGAN
Veteran LeDonne plays the Hammond B3 and leads an ensemble with tenor sax, guitar & drums (no bass) on this album of all covers. We get a few jazz compositions but more pop songs.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 * Mid-fast. Cool, sophisticated Milt Jackson piece. Good hollow-body guitar solo. (6:32)
2 Mid-tempo. Sax & guitar trade improv lines on a simple Stevie Wonder melody. (8:58)
3 Very fast. Technical showpiece especially for sax & drums. I didn’t love the tune. (10:38)
4 Slow. Sassy, bluesy take on a very familiar melody. Left me wanting more. (5:50)
5 ** Soulful theme & variations. Sax & guitar both shine on this McCoy Tyner tune. (6:48)
6 Mid-tempo. Competent cover of 70s hit by the group War. A good high school stage band could play this. (6:39)
7 Very fast. Stevie Wonder again. A showy toccata for organ. I don’t know why. (8:03)
