bizarre and minimal mix of french lounge, psych, and disco. diva airs over psych organs and guitars, disco beats, and the occasional nod to 50s and 60s rock/rnb. riyl toro y moi, gary numan, blood orange.
1. lots of aahh’s and vocalizing. muted, watery, out-of-tune guitars replaced by earthy rock chords for the chorus and a solo at 2:30. spacey synths and crowd cheering.
2. up-tempo peppy drums with the occasional big bass hit. glass synths. hesistant/restrained lounge vocal. kinda bland.
3. wandering psych guitar and washy synth static that cuts out suddenly. layered vocals. the second half of the song in french with vocals from laetitia sadier of stereolab.
***4. mellow 50’s prom vibes. i love the old rnb percussion on this one. electronic organ comes in at 1:30. sappy soul spoken word at the end.
5. french vocals with layered english chorus. punch drum machine, familiar glass synth keys. anxious minimal string and vocal arrangement at the end.
***6. Animals-ish 60s-rock picked guitar, shakers and up-tempo drums. interesting toned-down vocal backing in second half.
7. peppy, toro y moi-ish synth wash and guitar. vocoder throughout, sometimes accapella. psych guitar solo to end.
8. corny disco beats and bells with soft, distorted riff. large group of women sing chorus (“hello hello i know i know”).
9. FCC: sorta explicit sexually (called “erection” and says throughout). droll fred schneider spoken word about sex, very clinical. anxious and skittery post-punk guitar,
***10. drowsy euro bass synth line with static washes; piano over tender breakup lyrics. ends with stadium drums and guitar solo. best track on the album.
***11. sexy french whispering/vocalizing, navigating start-and-stop percussion and 80s movie synth keys. dogs parking toward for during last 30s, as synths sour and fade out.
12. lusty song for florida. throbbing and funky bass line with jingle bells and motown strings. distant and masked chorus (“i am in the future”).
13. reprise of 11. noisy grit and harps, followed by lone piano and barbara belting triumphantly in french.
14. dance remix of 8. basic euro club beat behind the original male and female choral vocals, kind of unnecessary
