The Earls of Leicester “The Earls of Leicester” Label: Rounder Records Joseph Reviewed 9/25/14 Channeling the bluegrass sound of 1950s Flatt & Scruggs, this album, produced by dobro god Jerry Douglas, abounds with great traditional interpretations of the F&S songbook. Also featuring Shawn Camp on guitar/lead vocals, Tim O’Brien on mandolin, Charlie Cushman on banjo and Johnny Warren on the fiddle. 1 – (2:49) Big Black Train* Mid-up-tempo, great intro to the album. 2 – (2:12) Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down* Fine version of the classic. 3 – (2:59) I’ll Go Stepping Too* Fun stomp, great vocals, solid banjo. 4 – (2:06) Shuckin’ The Corn* Fine mid-up picking by Cushman. 5 – (2:36) Till The End Of The World Rolls ‘Round* Solid version, fine. 6 – (2:22) Dig A Hole In The Meadow* Bouncy mid-tempo, swings. 7 – (3:43) Some Old Day* Douglas’s dobro sounds just like Josh Graves! 8 – (2:10) I Won’t Be Hanging Around* Mid-tempo, punch, fine. 9 – (2:37) I Don’t Care Anymore Decent Tompall Glazer waltz, OK. 10 – (2:47) On My Mind Solid, unexciting take on the Flatt classic. 11 – (2:27) You’re Not A Drop In The Bucket* Excellent, guitar body slaps! 12 – (3:15) Dim Lights, Thick Smoke Solid, workmanlike, decent rendition. 13 – (2:40) The Wandering Boy* Mid-up-tempo, A.P. Carter original, good. 14 – (2:31) Who Will Sing For Me* Beautiful gospel, sweet vocals & harmonies. |
