General Description: not seen the film; first original score by Devonté Hynes (AKA Blood Orange); very short pieces with minimal orchestration, heavy on the reverb, muffled vocals make lyrics hard to understand; no track stands out individually, sets a melancholy mood when listened straight through
– Musicians:
Samantha Urbani (guest vocals)
– FCC Compliant: YES
– Recommended Tracks: 12 & 13 if played back-to-back
– Track Reviews:
1. *(2:46) Palo Alto - moderate; electric piano block chords opening, R&B sounds with muffled vocals reverbed (has lyrics)
2. *(1:34) Soccer Field - medium-fast; xylophone over sustained chords and a burst of percussion
3. *(0:48) Teddy & April - medium; soft "ooo" vocalizing over guitar and percussion
4. *(1:56) April's Daydream - slow; more electric piano block chords, some bass, really muffled vocals with reverb, echoey ending (has lyrics)
5. *(0:44) Run To Graveyard - medium; single line piano idea
6. *(2:36) April's Bathroom Bummer - a mix of fast/slow; quick highhat and percussion, fast arpeggiating piano, block electric horns, really muffled vocals with reverb, abrupt ending (has lyrics)
7. *(0:53) Emily & Fred (Part 1) - slow; soft "ooo" vocalizing mostly over soft guitar and bass
8. *(1:41) Emily & Fred (Part 2) - slow; soft "ooo" vocalizing mostly over soft guitar and bass, a bit fuller in sound, abrupt ending
9. *(1:48) Teddy Rides Home - slow; repetitive electric sax sound with reverbed block electric piano chords
10. *(1:41) Teddy & Fred In The Playground - slow; strong distracting reverbed bass under some distant piano and strummed electric guitar, soft "ooo" vocalizing
11. *(2:03) Teddy In The Library - slow; electric piano motive, block chords, some arpeggiation
12. ***(1:44) Big Game - a mix of fast/slow; more xylophone in the Steve Reich mode, block chords, percussion
13. ***(1:07) April Bounces - moderate; sci-fi flavor of sustained ethereal sound over basic piano motive; (silent last 4 seconds)
14. *(1:13) Skateboard Garage - more sci-fi sustained electronic vocal with arpeggiating piano on top, some block bass movement
15. *(0:57) Teddy Loves April - slow; questioning single-line motive over block chords
16. *(0:33) April By The Pool - slow; single-line motive
17. *(4:35) Fred Drives - slow; constant repeat of previous motive with gradual addition of block chords, sustained electronic vocals and percussion, lots of melancholy, angelic ending that ends abruptly
18. *(0:37) Teddy Is Crushed - fast; arpeggiating line with tom-tom bass, ends abruptly
