Scottish producer Rustie presents to us his second full-length LP, filled with electronic beats that go so hard they can pump blood, as well as some interesting guest appearances. RIYL: Zedd, David Guetta, all that EDM stuff. Recommended: 4, 6, 10. FCC warnings in 5, 6, 8. 10
1. (2:00) Glistening sounds build up until it turns to a shimmering white noise, both angelic and bombastic, until it transforms into a final burst of energy that transitions to the next track.
2. (2:15) Mid-tempo, energetic synth patterns above a stadium-ready beat that signals the start of something great, something that is about to blow your socks off.
3. (4:09) Mid-fast, atmospheric and shimmering synths that build up and up until… a strange beat appears. Once the bass, percussion, and crowd chants start kicking in it becomes a sort of respectable banger, but by itself it sounds a bit… strange.
*4. (2:34) Mid-fast, the guy messes around with his synths for a bit, an interesting electronic marimba pattern develops as the synths go crazy in the background.
5. (3:44) FCC “bitch”. Mid-tempo, the beat makes this a pretty good banger, not so much the rapping. Lots of synths, and bumping bass. Also, that one loon sample.
**6. (3:01) FCC, various profanities. Highlight of the album, featuring Danny Brown, no less. Rustie builds the energy, releases it, and maintains it in a way that makes every second as exciting as the one before. Danny Brown does his thing again, and he does it very well. Approved for docking in safe harbor.
7. (1:44) Instrumental with a collage of well-orchestrated synths, small pause in the middle, and then an ear-pleasing key change.
8. (3:16) FCC. Mid-tempo banger, playful synths and machine-gun percussion work well in this one, sometimes the rapper sounds like he’s yet to have his morning coffee.
9. (3:18) Mid-fast, instrumental, synth riff sounds like it could belong to a video game for little kids, though the rapid outburst of percussion gives it a more stadium-oriented feel.
*10. (3:22) FCC. Mid-tempo, dat auto-tune, focuses on resonant percussion, supported by soft yet propelling synth riffs.
11. (3:08) Mid-slow. A quasi-passionate female vocalist buttressed by buzzing synths and booming percussion.
12. (2:28) Imagine you’re waking up in a field of exotic birds as sunshine arrives to your eyes… and then all the birds fly from their respective trees to do a majestic display of their collective beauty. Plus rapid high-hats and cymbal crashes.
13. (1:48) Soft closer, music for an aquarium or calm rainforest.
