This band combines 1960s Cambodian pop and psychedelic rock and, in The Deepest Lake, throws in Afrobeat brass and organ instrumentation. They usually employ lyrics in Khmer, only occasionally breaking out into English. From the band's website: "The roots of the band began in the late 1990s with a 6-month trek through Southeast Asia by keyboardist Ethan Holtzman. Returning to Los Angeles with a suitcase crammed full of Cambodian cassette tapes, Holtzman and his brother Zac, who had discovered the same music while working at a record store in San Francisco, reunited. The brothers soon bonded over their love of vintage Cambodian rock and in 2002 founded the band with saxophonist, David Ralicke (Beck/Brazzaville); drummer, Paul Dreux Smith; and bassist, Senon Williams (Radar Brothers). Shortly thereafter the members were on hot pursuit for the ideal Cambodian chanteuse to complete their outfit. After a short period of musical courtship that began at a Cambodian nightclub in Long Beach, CA, Chhom Nimol joined the band when she realized the band shared a genuine passion for the music and culture of her homeland." In 2012, the group formed its own record label, Tuk Tuk Records, and released its most recent album "The Deepest Lake".
RIYL - Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd's album "Animal Heart Mother" or "Meddle", Grateful Dead, British Invasion, psychedelic/surf rock, frenetic jam music
Recommended Tracks - 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9
1. Tokay (4:29) - Khmer lyrics. Maracas + heavy bass + plenty of echo = jungle groovin'. Excellent party music with a smooth, psychedelic rock tone throughout. FCC CLEAN
2. No Sudden Moves (3:43) - Khmer lyrics. Heavy psychedelic groove. Feel the bass on this one! FCC CLEAN
3. Rom Say Sok (4:09) - English lyrics. Upbeat! "Ride your motorcycle 10 feet off the ground." Rollicking song with a bippity-boppity vocal line in a harmonized vocal arrangement. Brass flourishes and watch for the wild guitar solo. FCC CLEAN
4. Ghost Voice (5:59) - Khmer lyrics. I think we have enough cowbell. Tempo andante moderato (laid back). Brass and organ instrumentation round out the dreamscape in this lament. The violin playing at the end is a bit lame, but whatever. FCC CLEAN
5. Deepest Lake on the Planet (5:26) - Khmer lyrics. This one really reminds me of The Doors' song "The End". Saxophone riff at the end. FCC CLEAN
6. Cardboard Castles (5:13) - Khmer and English lyrics. Mellow garage-rock. FCC CLEAN
7. Vacant Lot (4:12) - Khmer lyrics. Gritty, menacing sound transformed with a flute riff. FCC CLEAN
8. Still Waters Run Deep (3:43) - Khmer lyrics. Bazaar beginning. Here's the Afrobeat brass! FCC CLEAN
9. Taxi Dancer (5:14) - Khmer and English lyrics. Mellow groove. Somewhat silly song meant for the end of the party. FCC CLEAN
10. Golden Flute (4:39) - Khmer lyrics. Ethereal lounge music with a lullaby guitar and an accordeonic twist. FCC CLEAN
