Album Review
Telepathic Juan

Los Angeles’s Jack Name continues in his second album, Weird Moons, manufacturing tales of lunatic folklore. His first album was a wacky rock opera about over-medication, dimension traveling, and living in moons. The White Fence guitarist’s nonconformist approach for this second album makes him take cues from psychedelic music, krautrock, and concrete music to construct a surprisingly accessible pop album where strange, mostly quiet vocals revolt around synthesizer driven backgrounds and a good dose of eerie undertones.

John Dwyer, the owner of Castle Face, the label that released the record, describes Weird Moons here: “Reminiscent of late era Can, Bruce Haack, Hans Edler, Solid Space, Dario Argento, and VHS tape … listen to this album in an egg shaped speaker chair if possible”. The perfect soundtrack to visit the Salvador Dali theatre and museum in Catalonia, Spain.

RIYL: Ariel Pink, White Fence, Damaged Bug, Connan Mockasin, and, Mac DeMarco.

Recommended Tracks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8

1. (2:39) **Werewolf Factory – Slow spacey retro-funk track. Cool distortions.
2. (4:59) *Under The Weird Moon – Low-fi synth extravaganza. Great vocals everywhere. Rocking at the beat of a late 1960’s parallel universe.
3. (3:58) **Running After Ganymede – Krautrock electro beat, creepy whispery vocals, random sounds. One of the best tracks on the album.
4. (4:35) Lowly Ants – Another strange 1970’s inspired electronic upbeat track. Something for sure.
5. (2:12) *Waiting For Another Moon – Out of space pop. Trippy track.
6. (4:14) *Watcher Talk – 1970’s Krautrock meets 1980’s industrial music. It will make Faust proud.
7. (2:16) IO – Slow tune with minimalist arrangements and a nice vocal melody.
8. (2:55) *Something About Glenn Goins – Spacey ballad with a thing for 1970’s opera rock soundtracks.
