MAINSTREAM JAZZ COMBO

Troy Roberts plays tenor saxophone; he’s accompanied by piano, bass, and drums. The set includes five original compositions, two covers famous jazz standards, and one odd take of a Classical piano piece.

All instrumental. No FCC issues.

1 Fast. Light-hearted interpretation of “Stella.” Good piano bridge. (7:14)
2 Mid-slow. Sounds like practicing scales. I don’t get it. Sorry, but it’s boring. (8:40)
3 Slow. Pleasant little melody, but the piece drags. Low energy. (6:11)
4 * Mid-tempo. Catchy & soulful. Freddie Hubbard’s bright melody seems warmer here on a sax than on his trumpet. (8:28)
5 Slow. Sad sax intro, a bass solo, then mostly piano. A ballad but not a moving one. (8:37)
6 * Fast. Improvisational, intricate & interesting. Very good drumming. (6:53)
7 * Mid-fast. Good interaction between sax & piano. Steady, driving drums & bass. (9:26)
8 ** Mid-fast. Drum solo starts. Band enters, and sax takes the lead with a spirited melody. High energy piece that keeps getting better. Piano solo in middle is also quite good. (7:50)
