POP JAZZ VOCAL Better known as a TV actress (“ER”), here Gloria Reuben does the stereotype glamorous, sultry, chanteuse leaning against the piano act. Accompaniment is mostly piano, bass and drums; add in some strings now and then, and a trombone on a couple tracks. We’ve got love songs, standards, ballads—the sorts of songs you’d want to hear Streisand doing. No FCC issues. 1 Slow intro. When bass & drums enter; it gets livelier. A lonely girl at the dance. (4:40) 2 Very slow & sad. Lyric is a Maya Angelou poem. Min guitar, piano, bass, drums. (4:54) 3 * Mid-fast. Lively dance number with a Caribbean beat. Muted trombone solo. (3:47) 4 Mid-tempo. Streisand-ish take of song from “Willy Wonka.” Elec gtr, pno, drums. (4:54) 5 VERY slow. Dreamy love song. Soft guitar & brushes on cymbals. Quiet. (4:16) 6 * Mid-slow. Much covered song with words by Dorothy Parker. Bossa nova style. (5:45) 7 Mid-tempo. Yet another love song w pno, bass, drums. A bit happier than others. (5:00) 8 ** Mid-tempo. The best & jazziest number on the album. After she sings the first chorus, there’s a long instrumental bridge with good piano & guitar solos. (4:55) 9 Mid-tempo. Torch song. Prominent trombone should have been a warm tenor sax. (4:28) 10 Very slow. A downer of a song to finish the album. (4:13) |
