Sworn In - The Lovers/The Devil
Razor & Tie

The Lovers/The Devil is the sophomore record for Ilinois metalcore band Sworn In. The music incorporates the melodic clean choruses we’ve come to expect in metalcore with extremely down-tuned djent-style guitars, and a wide variety of screaming styles - only I Set My Friends On Fire has a wider range. The record is a “concept album” about a failing relationship, and lyrically it’s as awful as you’d expect. Sometimes the heavy/clean transitions feel totally disjointed and forced, but there are some really unique and sublime moments here, especially the falsetto on track 9. They haven’t perfected it yet, but this band is onto their own thing.

RIYL: Emmure, Suicide Silence, dysfunctional relationships, men with anger problems
FCCs: F bombs on most tracks. I made clean edits for 2,3,9. Otherwise safe harbor only.

Recommended: 2, 3, 7, 8 are good, but 9 is definitely the most unique and best.

1. Sweetheart - after the intro, tuneless djent guitar and screaming
2. Sugar Lips - catchy starting riff, screaming, bubblegum chorus
3. I don’t really love you - beautiful synths and a melodic chorus dominate this one
4. Oliolioxinfree - more conventional metalcore riffing, quite a bit of rhythmic variation
5. Waltz - absolutely haunting post-rock interlud with a weird whistling synth, leads directly to 6
6. Pins and Needles - single-string Emmure-style riff, one of the more catchy ones
7. Lay With Me - Diminished/djent guitar, anguished vocals. The chorus kind of comes out of nowhere, but the break at 2:04 is really fantastic!
8. Weeping Willow - ambient intro breaks into super heavy and slow
9. Pocket Full of Posies - teh best djent & screaming, then you will definitely love the falsetto chorus and start singing along, and it flows smoothly into the doo-doo-doodoodoo-doo. How?
10. Sunshine - reprise of Track 1, really heavy, but I don’t like the death threats
11. Scissors - Great chorus but doesn’t hold together as well
12. Sour - slow-jam ambient filler, blends well into 13
13. Love Drunk - deathcore feel on verse, then slows down and drags on slowly and painfully
