Death N.E.W.
Tryangle Records

N.E.W. is the first new record from the Detroit band Death (not to be confused with Florida death metal pioneers Death) since they broke up in 1977, albeit without original member David Hackney. They were “rediscovered” around 2008, and the Drag City releases of their 70’s era recordings have been widely heralded as the “missing link” in the history of punk. Musically, N.E.W. is a mixed bag - there are several straight-ahead protopunk burners, and then there are the “weird” songs - bizarre arrangement decisions, and occasionally painful banal lyrics. And yet, some of the weird ones mysteriously stick in your head! Really unique record.

no FCC’s!
RIYL: Blue Cheer, MC5, Stooges, The Shaggs

Recommended tracks: 1**, 2, 7*, 10?

1 Relief - Sing-along chorus, total summer jam rock and roll. Awesome song!
2 Look at your life - If you can get past the conceit of a 30/30 time signature (or whatever it is), this song is kind of great - and gets better as it goes along
3 Story of the World - vocals are distracting
4 The times - Straight-ahead biker rock
5 Playtime - ugh the lyrics. Maybe someone will think it’s cute? Not me.
6 At the station - another terrible miss
7 Who am I - wistful 80’s indie-rock beginning, then gets into diminished chord progression. Love it!
8 You Are What you Think - Zappa-esque: math rock with annoying vocals.
9 Resurrection - Straight-ahead rock song. A bit forgettable, but catchy while you’re listening to it.
10 Change - Lyrically, perhaps the dumbest on the record. And yet, I find myself singing it? Why?? Musically, laid-back vibe with a lot of tremolo on the guitars.
