Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) developed a style that originated in Chopin’s lyricism and paved the way toward “impressionism.” The style was marked by lyricism, fluidity, poetic expression, and chromatic harmonies. The Quartet Op. 45 begins with anguish and passion, moving to pensive conversations among the instruments. The 2nd mvmt is a furious scherzo whose harmonies give it a modernist edge. The 3rd mvmt is serene. The 4th mvmt is an impassioned lilting ballad with a joyous climax. Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was a compositional and piano prodigy exceeding Mozart and Mendelssohn in the range of his gifts. He valued tempered emotionalism, polished elegance, and intelligent design in his music. The Piano Quartet in B-flat Major Op. 41 is virtuosic and marries mid-19th cent. Romantic harmonies with neo-Baroque liturgical chant and counterpoint. The 1st mvmt is pastoral; the 2nd powerful and majestic; the 3rd is diabolical (like Danse Macabre); the 4th is emotionally serious with a glorious climax.
