MAINSTREAM JAZZ COMBO
On this record, Cory Weeds covers tunes written or performed by fellow alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. The ensemble here is alto sax, organ, electric guitar, and drums (no bass).
All the tracks are good; I’ve indicated some favorites.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 ** Fast. Soulful little melody. Good solos by sax, then guitar, then organ. (5:26)
2 Mid-tempo. Long, graceful improvisation lines. A bit sleepy though. (6:05)
3 Mid-fast, but easy going and light. Features elec guitar predominantly. (6:35)
4 * Slow. The only ballad here. A lovely, romantic melody on sax & guitar. (5:53)
5 ** Fast. Jumping, hard-bop piece. Good hollow-body elec guitar solo in middle. (5:43)
6 * Mid-fast. Happy melody by sax, then guitar, then organ. Drum solo. Sax ends it. (5:21)
7 * Mid-tempo. Finger-snapping beat. Fun interplay between sax & organ. Midway, the guitar gets a nice, bluesy solo. (6:04)
8 ** Very fast. A high speed thrill ride on the sax, then guitar, then organ, then drums. They must have been exhausted after this one. A ton of fun. (6:05)
9 Mid-fast. As the name suggests, a mashup of styles. Retro feel. (7:43)
10 Mid-tempo. Quite melodic with a bit of blues. Fairly long solos by each inst. (6:34)
