Noise pop defined. 1994 Wednesday Night Live recording, archived reel to reel transferred to digital 2015. Recent transplants to The Bay from New Mexico, theirs was a melodic sound that echoed My Bloody Valentine and breathed life into a local scene that was mired in the likes of Four Non Blondes, Green Day, Pavement. Though short lived their sparsely attended shows usually devolved into a noisy mess with members trading instruments (the guy was the only drummer I've ever witness drum so hard he drummed himself off the back of his stool). This recording captured a slow slow droning noise pop, like My Bloody Vakentine or Medicine on Quaaludes (if that's even possible - in fact when I first ran the tape I thought I had my deck at 7.5 ips). The guy is the only vocals here. Their story ended/continued as the girl (who plays drums here but switched to guitar often) Amy began to lend vocals and their songs hit the perfect noise pop pre-twee post grunge/shoe gaze stride and garnered them much attention (being one of Slumberlands first artists, along with the then unknown Stereolab, Tiger Trap, Softies, et al). Amy left and formed the Aislers Set, who are synonymous with the likes of Belle and Sebastian for fans of the genre, jangly slightly 60's and cutesy (This has very little to do with that). Epic performance.
1) (0:23) intro 2) (5:24) slow lush mush mouthed 3) (5:49) tuning at first, then a bendy nod, maybe only slightly more upbeat than the previous 4) (6:42) intro with mention of the then nascent Slumberland records, a big drone, ride cymbal gives way finally to a big plod, very drony 5)* (5:43) finally a beat you can sink your teeth into, play this one if you're nodding off 6) (3:29) interlude 7) (5:22) slow and drony again 8)* (2:36) upbeat, still swallowed, loveless, but more songlike 9)* (5:28) little dj blurb "this is wnl w Henry's dress" at head, always nice to play such tracks, slow one again, but picks up heavy midway 10) (0:21) interlude 11) (3:29) heavy bass and sub vocs, minimal drums, barely 12) (3:33) tiger trap cover w intro, mid paced melodic 13) (0:23) interlude 14) (3:31) pre recorded 7" by Tiger Trap, can see the influence they had on HD, we may have this lovely 7", perfect dream pop 15) (7:08) interview: a good one with historical significance, especially since Amy is now "them" (they?) 16) (5:00) pre recorded 7" song, so fucking good
