Margy Kahn Reviewed 2015-09-02 | ||
Finnish folk songs played in jazz styles on a tenor sax. Lyrics and notes on case provide context. Recording quality could be better; but still interesting and worth playing No FCC's (all instrumental) Lapin Aidin Kehto Laulu (Lapland Mother's Cradle Song) strong melody played by sax segues into jazz riffs with percussive underpinnings; not very lullaby-ish, but interesting; trails off at end 5:04 Taivas on Sininen Ja Valkoinen (The Sky Is Blue and White) – extended sax solo with some percussion 7:30 *Karjalan Kunnailla (Hills of Karelia) more pensive (I can picture those hills) – nice guitar plus sax 4:40 *Valiaikainen (Temporary) –familiar sounding melody, repurposed polka, but nice 5:30 Ken Voi Tyynessa Seilata (Who Can Sail in the Calm?) starts off with bass; nice slow melancholy waltz which then peps up 5:02 Toul' on Mun Kultani (There Is My Sweetheart) solo sax; sound quality less than optimal 3:47 Tuohinen Sormus (Birchbark Ring) – tune sounds a little generic played this way, 6:17 Villiruusu (Wild Rose) - more interesting melody to start, more drum work; nice trilling fadeout at the end 3:00 |
