JAZZ VOCALS
Cecile McLorin Salvant’s follow-up album to her Grammy nominated “WomanChild” of 2013 is another eclectic mix of singing styles and musical eras. Five songs (1, 4, 6, 8, 12) were written by McLorin Salvant, all of them sad or troubling. The rest include novelties, show tunes, pop songs, and a tragic French-language lament.
No FCC issues.
* Very slow intro, then mid-tempo. Sad, lonesome vocal. Piano and percussion. (5:16)
Mid-tempo. Fun sequel to “Minnie the Moocher” by Cab Calloway’s big sister. (4:34)
Mid-tempo. Humorous song from Rogers/Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”. (2:20)
** Slow. Lonely girl, pining away. Gorgeous vocal. Elegant accompaniment. (2:45)
Mid-tempo. This horribly sexist song was a hit and Grammy winner in the 1960s. (2:59)
Mid-slow, very melancholy. Same lonely, forsaken theme as 1, 3, 4. (4:27)
* Tricky, varied tempo. Showy interpretation of a show tune famously sung by Judy Garland. Virtuosic singing and entertaining accompaniment. (3:51)
* Slow. A graceful and pretty love song. (2:01)
** Mid-tempo. Sexy song with a slightly vampy singing style. Soulful backing. (4:18)
Very slow. Life is miserable. French lyrics. (6:14)
* Mid-tempo. Jazzed up treatment of a tune from “West Side Story.” A bit long. (10:33)
Mid-tempo. Seeming traditional jazz-song by an “underling” about her master. (3:39)
