“Ethiopiyawi electronic”/electronic/beats and textures/bass music

Ethiopian producer melds elements from the musical styles of his home country with elements from UK and US electronic music of the FWD>> and Low End Theory varieties. This EP homes in on the structures and textures common to both, leaning electronic. Chants and trancey vocals looped and dubbed out, beats ranging from four-on-the-floor to slow syncopated stutters, but also lots of ambient passages and breathing room. Really great stuff, this guy is part of a small scene of like-minded musicians making “Ethiopiyawi electronic” (Ethiopian electronic), meshing their disparate influences from home and abroad.

RIYL: Jan Jelinek, Mount Kimbie, fragments of Mulatu Astatke, Konono No 1, Burial

1. nervy dubbed out slowly building house with a good helping of ambient passages. clean slow beat with dubby woodblocks goes all crunchy, static and noise slowly taking over, warm fog comes in and breaks the tension for a second then adds to it. chopped vocal atmospherics and synth drones. introduces most of the parts early on and wrings plenty of narcotic loopy goodness out of them. 9:45
2. galloping crunchy beat, fuzz, sly rhythm guitar plucks. breaks down, shifts to shuffling piano and jazzy drums for a bit, shifts back to a hybrid of the two. guitar and vocal atmospherics for a stretch dissolve into decaying bassy drone and glitches. like a lost mulatu astatke + mt kimbie collab demo. 3:31
3. dim neon slow burner, so damn good. smeared male vox fragments and synths, screwed and submerged, crunchy drums come in but no showy drop. then echoing panned female vox fragments. entrancing unintelligible chants, bass sweeps. drums come and go, dubby suspended animation stays. 10:37
4. imposing bass tones. woodwind (muffled flute, maybe live?), quiet synth accents and quickly rising synth sheets. keyboard horns, bass fades out, slow distorted kicks and other interlocking percussion. bass and wind slowly come back. slow, a bit dramatic for my taste, but very well put together, cool textures as always. 5:54

recommended: 3, 1&2 tie, 4
