Really delightful debut cd by Las-Vegas based vocalist Shamir. Only 19, his voice is exquisite: effortlessly extending up to counter-tenor, fluttering and diving as needed, sometimes busting out some fierce rap (oh snap!). Comparisons to early Prince are unavoidable, and well-deserved - both for Shamir’s musical sense, and his fey, ambiguous sexuality. The backing music is electronic, with solid bass beats and ecstatic synthesizer leads. Wonderful!

1. Slower, haunting, fragile vocals, about his hometown (Vegas)
2. Sing-song talking/rapping, exuberant synth lead, catchy
3. The big hit, has a popular video. Awesome braggadocio rap. FCC “fuck”
4. Weird harmony, 70’s soul falsetto chorus
5. Takes a while to build, “He’s a hot mess” chorus is great
6. Absolutely beautiful, vocals and organ, very early Prince vibe, slowly fills in
7. Lilting, marching rhythm, infectious and memorable melody
8. Fluttering falsetto verses, chorus gets more anthemic
9. Another early Prince tribute, slow organ and inspirational lyrics, very stripped-down
10. Dancey beat, “Got my head in the clowds”, then the synth lead floats away…
11. Acoustic guitar ballad about a girl he thought was cute? I really hate this one. Totally out of place.
