A Jewish cultural revival band based in SoCal-- fusion of Eastern European songs with Latin and jazz rhythms; competent vocals and instrumentals; lots more bounce than you sometimes hear with this kind of music; also English lyrics to go with the Yiddish ones FCC clean Favorite tracks: 2, 3,4, 8 1 – Ikh Hob Dikh Tsufil Lib –3:47-- Yiddish and English (“I Love You Much Too Much”) – Tango salsa rhythms combined with traditional Yiddish vocals – very lively fusion piece *2- Cuando El Rey Nimrod –3:10—klezmer-style version of Ladino song *3-Dodi Li – 5:18 – starts with clarinet duet; nice instrumental strands for this classic Israeli song, segues into jazz riffs *4-Donna, Donna -5:30-- piano and violin duet starts up mournfully, transitions into upbeat jazz take on this familiar melody 5-Dos Keshenever Shtikele – 3:23 – straight-ahead klezmer – Yiddish and English 6- Papirosen –3:32-- sad tale in English and then Yiddish backed with klezmer instrumentals 7- Oyfn Pripetshik – 5:28 – begins with pizzicato melody; soprano picks up melody *8-A Yor Nokh Mayn Khasene –4:11- starts low key, minor scale, guitar and accordion; then picks up speed; whole band comes in with yelling 9-Shivchei Ma'oz –Ma'oz Tsur – 4:20 – unusual medley; starts with mournful male solo backed by trumpet, segues to livelier female voice, Latin rhythms; followed by unison singing in English of “Rock of Ages” in English; ends with recording of Eleanor Roosevelt 10-Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen –4:56-- soprano, lieder-like singing; slow |
