Album Review

Reviewed 2016-01-14
From Amharic word for “language;” energetic, slightly psychedelic-sounding band; lots of good percussion, unusual sound qualities; traditional Ethiopian music with a rock/funk/jazz sensibility

no FCC violations detected

*1 – Gelani (6:51) – interesting electric Ethiopian instruments (electric “krars”; nice percussive beat

*2- Kemekem (4:50) – smoother sounding with guitars and violin segues to funkier sound and beat

*3—Selam Selam (7:52) – heavier and more traditional sounding, but still with rock beat; slight zydeco flair with fiddle sound

*4-Tezeta (11:53) – starts with a jazz-sounding tuning up; voice comes in singing presumably Amharic lyrics; interlude of experimental sounding jazz riffs; back to lyrics; finally settles into an all-instrumental groove that is pleasant to listen to

*5-Mela Mela (4:25) – starts out catchy with nice violin work; fairly steady rhythm; melody circles around

6- Gorage (6:20) – punchier; strong circular bass with electric krar and violin; heavy drums and synth come in partway through; a little repetitive for me, but maybe not everyone
