Minimal, sad ambient. Paw Grabowski is øjeRum, a Copenhagen-based artist mining melancholy with a minimalist toolset. Much of his catalog has been released on low-run cassettes, carrying lo-fi, spindly, surreal guitar or organ-based music. "The Forest.." is a restrained affair; just piano, tasteful droning pump organ, and some gentle tape hum. Minute details slowly shapeshift on these simple constructions, which lap outwards via floating pieces. The gentle repetition brings William Basinski’s "Disintegration Loops" immediately to mind. I see images of crumbling factories, unfolding on Super 8 film, the calm after the chaos of extreme weather events, and a world slowly folding in on itself in slow motion. These drones are for those inhabiting a desolate planet. This album is the Dead Flag Blues. But there is joy and gratitude in staring at the abyss. Also for fans of James Leyland Kirby’s The Caretaker project, Jesu, Eluvium, and Loscil.
