ECLECTIC JAZZ

Charles Lloyd and Bill Frisell are almost co-leaders, as most songs serve as duets of sax and guitar. As both these great musicians tend to do on their own respective albums, here they’ve nicely mixed jazz, world, folk, and other influences.
Vocals on tracks 7 & 9. Instrumental otherwise. No FCC issues.

1 *** Slow. Dylan’s angry denunciation of the military-industrial complex gets a solemn, powerful treatment. Lloyd & Frisell alternate verses getting more abstract as it goes. (8:05)
2 * Fast. Happy, soulful melody with Lloyd on flute. Snappy, energetic rhythm. (6:03)
3 * Slow. Pretty, tender ballad with a bit of Spanish flavor. (6:02)
4 Very slow. Much loved American folk song is quiet as a lullaby. (6:23)
5 Slow start. Loose meandering improv eventually drops into the groove, picks it up to mid-tempo. Melody on flute. (7:31)
6 ** Very slow, sad lament with country & blues influences. A warm loving tone on both guitar & sax. While sad, it’s also reassuring, like a comforting hug. (5:02)
7 ** Slow. Willie Nelson with his warm, wonderful warble sings this anti-war song by Ed McCurdy. It’s a perfect blend of jazz & country. (4:50)
8 Slow. Traditional folk song done on sax with no frills. Pretty but sleepy. (1:22)
9 Very slow. Nora Jones sings Cocker’s big hit. She bends & stretches the melody nicely, giving it a lot of class. It’s nicely done but likely too sappy for KZSU listeners. (6:05)
10 *** Starts slow, quiet. Gains tempo & volume as it goes. Elements of folk music, world music, and groovy jam band. Lloyd on both tenor & flute. A masterpiece. (16:25)
