JAZZ: BASS & PIANO Bassists David Friesen & Glen Moore (of the 1970s world-jazz group Oregon) provide a tardy follow up to their excellent 1977 “In Concert” LP. On odd numbered tracks, we hear only two basses: Friesen plays an upright electric bass; Moore an acoustic. On even numbered tracks, one or the other gentleman plays piano. See liner notes for details. No FCC issues. 1 * Mid-tempo. Pizzicato with a snappy rhythm. Lighthearted, playful & fun. (4:49) 2 * Slow. Abstract & avant-garde piano. Ominous, tense. Percussive bass. (4:19) 3 Mid-fast. Virtuosic technique but lifeless. Square dance references without the fun. (5:47) 4 * Slow. Nice improvisation on both piano & bass. Peaceful, impressionistic. (4:34) 5 Slow. Slogging, two-bass interpretation of a Duke Ellington tune. (5:45) 6 ** Slow. Pretty, dreamy piano fantasy. Bass goes from strange to beautiful. (6:15) 7 Very slow. Independent & complementary bass lines. No melody to speak of. (4:38) 8 Mid-slow. Mainly a piano piece with shimmering, impressionistic effect. (4:01) 9 Slow. Quite a strange version of the Gershwin classic. Only hints of the melody. (2:29) 10 * Slow. Quick, sneaky spurts of melody tossed back & forth. Avant-garde. (9:41) 11 ** Slow. Strange but completely captivating, with a wide range of technique and tone (arco, pizzicato, percussive & electronic effects). Best of the two-bass-only tracks. (8:23) |
