Imported by way of the Crusades (c. 1204), the music on this disc captures Mediterranean sacred music, particularly from the Greek Orthodox and Catholic churches. Located strategically, Cyprus has always been the site of cultural and commercial interchange between Eastern and Western traditions. We hear a combination of 14th Century Greek and Latin hymns; prayers for French kings and royalty in Ars nova style; and Byzantine chants common to Constantinople and Cypriot composers. Conductor Alexander Lingas leads an ensemble of 11 singers in these passionate alleluias, glorias, motets and sacred songs. Many pieces derive from the Lusignan court, as collected by Jean Hanelle, 1434-1436, a musical scholar who served in the Catholic chapel at Nicosia. Some musical pieces also celebrates St. Hilarion (the Joyful), born in Gaza in 271 AD, and patron saint of Cyprus, a Christian monk and hermit living near Paphos.
