Most works on this CD are transcriptions of American composers’ songs, some of which didn’t appear in the Broadway or film version musicals they were composed for. Each piece is melodious and nostalgic.
Samples of Leonard Bernstein’s (1918-1990) melodic style include “Some Other Time” from On the Town and “In Our Time,” a “trunk song,” he could quickly pull out if a show needed a tune. “Dream with Me” was written for Peter Pan (1950), but when it failed, discarded until 2001. “For Lukas Foss,” from solo piano pieces (Anniversaries, 1943-1988), is a character sketch echoing Foss’ fascination with modes and dissonance. The 1942 Clarinet Sonata foreshadows West Side Story with Latin rhythms, instrumental interplay and yearning melodies. “For Aaron Copland” (Anniversaries), is a tender meditation in open chords.
In Barbers’ Sonata (1932), his lyrical style dominates the 1st mvmt. The slow mvmt merges immediately into the playful Presto section and returns to the thoughtful Adagio material. The last mvmt has epic and virtuoso passages, passionate and fiery music. “Sure on this Shining Night” is among Barber’s most notable songs (words by James Agee).
Lukas Foss (1922-2009), a prolific composer and noted conductor, wrote “For Lenny ‘Variations on New York, New York’” as homage to Bernstein’s 70th birthday and the jazzy, bright music in On the Town. The Capriccio for Cello and Piano (1946) celebrates Aaron Copland’s American rodeo spirit.
From the “Dean” of American composers, Aaron Copland’s (1900-1990) set of Old American Songs, Bailey plays “Simple Gifts” (from Appalachian Spring). “Long Time Ago” expresses the spirit of friendship to which this album is dedicated.
