Dave Holodiloff, Monterey-based mandolin player as well as composer, bandleader and multi-instrumentalist has put together a talented group of local musicians and composed and arranged lively tunes which show off each player and instrument to advantage; half jazz/half world NO FCC's; all instrumental; all tracks are good; Favorites 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11 *1-Foggy Coast (3:35) mandolin fronts in lively Celtic type tune; nice fiddle & bass, flute comes in; then instruments subtract, nice punch at end 2-Swing and Spice (3:28) - lots of nice fiddle work, punctuated with mando and horn flourishes *3-Stone'sThrow (3:06) – mandolin-heavy jig with fiddle and horn echoes; 4-Growing Rains (3:19) – lots of percussion on this one to simulate the rainfall; jazz-inspired *5-Ritual Nectar (4:47) – guitar lead-off with percussion; eastern inspired with minor key modulations; nice guitar vamp with flute over it **6-Softly Swirling (5:29) – slower with piano chord progression leading into horns plus mandolin, beautifully textured; treble mandolin chords especially pretty 7-Hobie's Reel (3:52) – starts slower, more mysteriously with fiddle notes bending; segues to fast reel; then jazz idea of a reel; then back to straight reel *8-Itsy Bitsy Gypsy (3:03) – bass throws out the tune; mando follows; other instruments kick in; feels like jazz 9-Indian Summer Samba (4:57) – choro-sounding music with flute and catchy strings 10-Rattlesnake Rhumba (3:38) – mandolin out in front on this romp **11-London Bridge Breakdown – (4:25) – brief cacophony and then a serious intro to a minor key London Bridges that gets broken down every which-way 12-When the World Sleeps (4:06) – one of the few slower tracks; piano starts off melody; violin takes it up sweetly; then flute while piano and percussion keep time 13-Reel Dreams (5:00) – lively mando playing, backed by guitar; fiddle comes in; last flute & bass |
