AVANT GARDE / FREE JAZZ

The late David S. Ware made his first recordings as a leader in 1977 (having previously worked for Cecil Taylor and Andrew Cyrille). An LP appeared on a small European label, but has been out of print for decades and is not in our library. Here that album is again, remixed & remastered, on disc 1. Disc 2 includes one alternate take and several unleased tracks from those same 1977 sessions. Ware is on tenor sax, backed by piano and drums.
For those who like free experimental jazz, this is excellent throughout.

All instrumental. No FCC issues.

Disc 1
1 ** Powerful invocation. Spiritual a la Coltrane at first, gets freer as it goes. (10:54)
2 * Wild, free improv. Each man does his own thing. Machine-gun drumming. (16:34)
3 ** Intricate & fairly structured at first. Becomes free-for-all chaos. (13:48)
4 * Ware kicks off playfully. An angry piano joins. Drummer goes nuts. (12:00)

Disc 2
1 Alternate take of disc 1 #1. Not much different. (12:07)
2 ** Soaring melody on sax, pretty & plaintive. Gets deconstructed and scrambled. (14:06)
3 * Takes off fast & fearless. Stops & starts repeatedly. Crazy, free piano & drums. (17:05)
4 Mid-fast. Old time spiritual done by the pianist on a wooden xylophone. (2:30)
5 *** Unaccompanied, free solo improvisation on tenor sax. Excellent. (6:56)
