IAN CAREY QUINTET + 1: INTERVIEW MUSIC
Kabocha, 2016
MODERN JAZZ – Bay Area trumpeter/composer Carey continues to one-up himself on a string of impressive releases. In this suite, Carey's tight ensemble sounds bigger than it is, with bass clarinet adding a woody texture. The roaming arrangements take plenty of risks but it's all accessible and shows unity of vision. Nice work!
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 6
1. 09:55 – propulsive rhythm vs languid ensemble winds; bright solos, gets wild
2. 15:59 – lovely dusky theme & lyrical solos; sax weaves around monotone riff; meditative floating segment, all comes together at end
3. 11:54 – off-center & eclectic, slinks from mysterious harmonies thru cool jazz, staccato statements, hypnotic trumpet overdubs, heavy ending
4. 00:47 – free-floating, moody interlude
5. 14:43 – lopsided yet optimistic feel; solos blow hither & yon like paper caught in the wind, a more cerebral sound in the middle
6. 07:04 – brooding melody builds, trumpet muses, 2nd half brighter, falls back
