IAN CAREY QUINTET + 1: INTERVIEW MUSIC Kabocha, 2016 MODERN JAZZ – Bay Area trumpeter/composer Carey continues to one-up himself on a string of impressive releases. In this suite, Carey's tight ensemble sounds bigger than it is, with bass clarinet adding a woody texture. The roaming arrangements take plenty of risks but it's all accessible and shows unity of vision. Nice work!
