Burn Something Beautiful is the eleventh studio album by legendary San Antonio, Texas-born punker/troubadour Alejandro Escovedo. Taking clues from classic rock, 1970s glam, New York pre-punk, and early 1990s alternative, Burn Something Beautiful is a stylish guitar-driven record produced by Alejandro Escovedo’s longtime collaborator Scott McCaughey and newcomer Peter Buck from R.E.M. fame, who also played guitars and helped co-write the album. This is another great long play in a string of recent recordings by Alejandro Escovedo, who keeps writing exceptional songs as the years go by. One of my favorite albums of 2016. RIYL: T. Rex, Johnny Thunders And The Original Heartbreakers, Steve Earle, Old 97’s and The Nuns. FCC CLEAN! Recommended Tracks: 1, 2, 3, 6, 8!!!, 9, 11, 12 1. (3:35) **Horizontal – Killer upbeat opener. Sets the mood for the rest of the album. Great guitars. The intro riff reminds me of something from R.E.M.’s Monster. 2. (3:35) **Heartbeat Smile – Classic rock 101 here. Medium-up tempo. It has a little of that energy from early Tom Petty records. Inspired guitars. Rock on! 3. (3:42) ***Sunday Morning Feeling – Another gem here. Feels like a mid 1970s NY punk ballad. Melancholic. Damn guitars! Medium-up tempo track. 4. (4:25) Suit Of Lights – Classic rock ballad. Support vocals by Kelly Hogan, member of Neko Case's backing band. 5. (3:31) Redemption Blues – Acoustic ballad. Kind of gritty. Real stuff here. 6. (3:06) *Shave The Cat – Upbeat rocker. T. Rex glam here. Slick! 7. (4:49) Johnny Volume – Slow tempo rocker. Intense. 8. (3:07) ***Beauty Of Your Smile – Punk storytelling at the speed of glam. Medium-up tempo. Killer guitars. My favorite track on the album. 9. (3:43) *I Don't Want To Play Guitar Anymore – Another solid rock track in the shape of a slow tempo ballad. 1970s rock forever. 10. (4:00) Beauty And The Buzz – More classic rock ballads for the 21st century. 11. (2:57) *Luna De Miel – Medium-up tempo recording that makes me think of the mid1990s band The Make-Up. Yeah! 12. (3:45) *Farewell To The Good Times – Medium-up rocker. Nice melody. Early Tom Petty forever. 13. (4:15) Thought I'd Let You Know – Nothing wrong with ending with a rock ballad. Sweet farewell. |
