AVANT-GARDE JAZZ

The jacket says this was recorded live in Oakland, but there’s no crowd sound at all. Perhaps that means it was a continuous take (like Ornette’s “Free Jazz”) rather than a concert. Don’t know; there’s not much info provided. The lineup here is saxes, occasional flute, cello, and drums. Two players are from Oakland; the third is from NYC. Each track fades out 5-10 sec early, except #5 which stops suddenly.

All instrumental. No FCC issues.

1 * Slow. Somber & thoughtful. Melodic at times. Noises on cello. Long fade. (8:53)
2 Fast. Free improv. Atonal, harsh. Sawing on the cello. Sax at start, flute later. (8:06)
3 ** Mid-tempo then slow. Syncopated interaction. Perky, then eerie. Interesting. (7:04)
4 Slow. Drums start, with squawks on sax. Free & strange. The most avant garde.(6:51)
5 * Fast. Squawks & loud drumming. Drone on cello. Call this one acid. (2:59)
